Welcome to my personal blog!

Irregular update times, but I continue!

The road to Gentoo: Is it really worth it?

Last updated: September 7th, 2022

This last week, I tried to get into Gentoo for the...idk, 8th time? Before talking about that, though, it's important to highlight why i got into Linux in the first place.

It was August 2021, and my family got kinda tired of Windows. Why can't they fix their Task Manager? That thing takes a lot to start. Also, the forced updates were getting to my nerves The last straw was the fact that explorer.exe stopped showing labels, which made it extremely difficult to use. I remembered the pain of using Windows a month ago, when I got my new laptop. For one, it started downloading and installing updates the same night i used it for the first time. When I installed Ubuntu MATE, it was all nice, and dual boot was working fine. Then i installed Arch, ran grub-mkconfig and Windows Boot Manager was not found. At first, I thought I missed something. In fact, i forgot to mount the Windows partition when I ran grub-mkconfig. When I mounted the Windows boot partition, a warning appeared saying that the partition was on hibernation mode or something like that. Basically, Windows killed itself. Moving to Linux (or GNU/Linux, for the purists) was like going from nothing to everything, and I like the fact that it's all about choice, especially for guyss like me. Want that flat, soulless material design bs that Google basically shoved down our throat 7 years ago or the vaporwave stuff made by guys high in LSD? You can. Want that shiny, forgotten 2000s style that inspired creativity? Go for it, and I sure do. Want the most lightweight system? You have it.

Gentoo is part of that philosophy, taken to the extreme. Everything is compiled (except bin packages, which you have to explicitly emerge) and most operations are done under OpenRC. I like the fact that you can really have pinpoint customization with the USE flags and package.use, especially with emacs since i don't want to use the GUI version. However, compilation takes a really long time, especially for packages like LLVM, Firefox and Rust. When I tried it on my laptop, i3wm needed Rust, and it took 3 hours to compile. After setting everything up and rebooting, it froze on Loading initramfs. I read that the kernel could have some options disabled, so i tried the distribution kernel. Didn't work either. My NVMe drive probably lost a lot of cycles.

I had more luck with my desktop PC, but it was still troublesome. 2 days for the base system, Xorg and dwm to be installed. Then i needed a browser. It was all a mess. At the end, I decided to just install Arch, and here i am, happy with i3 and Arch.

Gentoo's main idea is interesting, but it needs a lot of patience, and i'm not particularly patient. That's the best summary i can give.

Media i consumed this year, and my thoughts on it. (A very small slice...)

Okay, so in this post i'll talk about games, anime and other things that i experienced this year. It's a long list and it has a lot of SPOILERS, i'm warning you -.-

Little Busters! (the 2007 visual novel)

So yeah, i started 2022 with this...game? If you have played any Key visual novel, then you will know that their visual novels focus a lot on story, reason why many like to play their ecchi games (Kanon, Air, etc.) with the censored version. Little Busters changes this by integrating minigame mechanics which actually made me more engaged to the game. Some affect the story, some not...

What, you thought I left this?

Right after my Debian post, things got chaotic. I was waiting to get a new laptop in August so i could write to my heart's extent, then Finals came in a blink. God, that was the most stressful week i had. Having to do 2 15p+ works in a week, a team essay (the essay was a bit easier, though) and practice A LOT to get good scores, since i was about to fck up Algebra (losing almost all my sanity in the process). To say i was relieved when it all ended is an understatement.

It's almost midnight, and the second is starting in less than a week. At least it's a fresh start. I need to get some sleep, but i'll leave with some words. After all, i always wanted to express myself like this.

Awesome debian!

Last week, i installed Debian with lxde after toying with it for a while. I love it! The design reminds me of a fusion between XP and Longhorn, back when Windows was still good. And it only uses 400M on startup. To compare, Windows 10 uses near 2.5G ON STARTUP. Why? Probably a bunch of bs i'll barely use in my life and even stuff that is really annoying, like auto-updates that force you out of your current work and leave your computer unoperable for the entire day. Linux is better in that aspect, since most updates don't even require restarts, and if they do require, you can restart whenever you want. Ubuntu was way better than Win10 in RAM usage, since it used 1.3G.

In addition, almost everything on the system is modular: The file manager, the window manager, the taskbar, the package manager... So i can set my own keybinds for some things. For instance, i have winkey+t assigned so i can open the terminal! And i can finally disable font smoothing, making fonts look way sharper. If you haven't used Debian, give it a try in a VM, then install it on the bare metal! Try the different desktop environments and choose the one you like! Personally, LXDE is my favorite, but MATE is also pretty good.

Peace, at last!

Why haven't i written a thing since the 24th? Well, it so happens this week was test week! I was kinda busy. But now, I can write and rest for a bit!

How they have been? Some easy, some hard, one of them insanely hard. Well at least it counts as 20% of the whole course. Theres still half the courses left, so i can turn around those in a critical situation. As a resume, "La semana 8 casi me hace reflexionar" (week 8 almost made me think, a sort of joke in my university since our tests are on week 8. you get it? 16 weeks, test 1 at week 8, final test at week 16)

Anyway, no talking about university. I had enough living it by myself.

Welcome!

Welcome! This is actually my first entry in this thing. I did another website in Neocities months ago but i forgot the ID and wanted to start fresh so yeah, here i am now.

Who am I? A 17 year old from Peru, who started University just a couple of months ago. I am interested in computers, videogames and anime. hell, like anyone from my generation. but it's boring now. what i like the most is vibrant and colorful stuff from the 2000s. Videogames, anime, the tech world. Everything. I believe everything was way better back then (even though i haven't experienced it myself, i'm more of an early 2010s child).

Why i started this? Probably because i agree with the main premise of this website: Bringing back good old 90s and 2ks internet. Today's internet is soulless. TikTok is disgusting. Twitter makes me puke. Fkn Gringos, Google, Facebook and Microsoft want to control what i do because cHiLdReN and sAfEtY. A loud minority sees NFTs and metaverse as the future, i see them as a soulless future (i like the idea of BTC as secondary payment method, though). The woke think they are gods who know the truth, when in reality, they are just selfish fks. And the list goes on and on. It's about time we go back to our roots and see a new future. And if there's a way i can make it happen, i'm in!
Plus, it's a perfect opportunity to keep my webdev skills sharp for when i need them.

I'll update the looks of this site when i have time. Till then, i'll write some thoughts i have as plain text! Cya <^.-> (god, i don't write kaomojis in a long time, it sure feels kinda embarrassing)
